ATU and The Metaverse Institute Forge Alliance to Shape Africa’s Digital Landscape
The African Telecommunications Union (ATU), the continent’s principal intergovernmental ICT policy organization, has partnered with The Metaverse Institute, a consortium of experts in metaverse technologies, artificial intelligence, and smart cities, to establish a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at ATU’s Nairobi headquarters. This collaboration aims to create a governance and adoption framework for the metaverse in Africa, which is envisioned as a cohesive ecosystem of virtual environments that enhances user experiences while generating new avenues for economic, environmental, social, and cultural advancements in the evolving landscape of the 3D internet.
With a projected investment of USD 5 trillion earmarked for training humanoid robots in secure and efficient virtual settings, the metaverse presents Africa with a unique opportunity to tackle its most urgent issues. This virtual ecosystem provides innovative solutions for challenges that are often too costly, such as developing smart city infrastructures, and also addresses bold initiatives like safe surgical training and medical simulations, as well as the training of humanoid robots. Moreover, it facilitates complex climate change simulations and enhances human capital by improving food security through virtual agricultural strategies and transforming educational access and quality.
This immersive 3D internet has the potential to connect disparate regions, democratizing access to invaluable knowledge and skills, thus empowering Africa’s youthful population. The agreement also emphasizes collaboration in capacity-building and oversight of joint projects. The signing ceremony, led by ATU Secretary-General John Omo and The Metaverse Institute’s CEO Dr. Christina Yan Zhang, underscored the urgent need to expedite Africa’s digital transformation.
Strategic Initiatives and Future Goals
As part of the MoU, both organizations will work together to formulate continent-wide policies and technical standards to steer the development of the metaverse across various sectors. They will initiate training programs aimed at enhancing skills in virtual reality and blockchain technology and establish a joint oversight committee to monitor pilot projects across ATU’s 52 member states. Omo described the agreement as a pivotal moment in Africa’s digital evolution, positioning the continent to take a leading role in the next generation of internet platforms. “Our youth are entering a new world of opportunity. We must act now to build safe, inclusive virtual economies and communities,” he remarked.
These initiatives are particularly timely as internet usage in Africa surged from approximately 28.6% in 2019 to 38% by 2024, resulting in tens of millions of new users within just five years. The GSMA, the global association representing mobile network operators, reports that 27 operators across 16 markets have rolled out 5G networks, with mobile technologies contributing over 8% (around $170 billion) to Africa’s GDP. However, despite representing about 18% of the global population, Africa holds less than 1% of the world’s data center capacity.
A Vision for a Digitally Empowered Africa
With projections from the UN suggesting that nearly half of the world’s youth will be African by 2100, the collaboration with ATU is deemed essential. Dr. Christina Yan Zhang expressed the importance of this partnership, stating, “We are honored to comprehensively evaluate the impact of emerging technologies and the virtual worlds ecosystem on the continent, delivering pragmatic recommendations to maximize Africa’s global competitiveness.” She emphasized a shared vision for a digitally empowered Africa by 2063, aspiring to become a global leader in the digital revolution where innovation benefits humanity, fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
In the coming months, ATU and The Metaverse Institute will convene joint working groups to draft the governance framework and initiate training programs aimed at building these critical skills across the continent.
