Epic Games Collaborates with Unity for Fortnite Integration

Epic Games is joining forces with Unity, one of its main competitors in game development, to incorporate games built using Unity’s engine into the popular game Fortnite. This collaboration will enable Unity-developed games to coexist alongside Epic’s creations and those made by external developers utilizing the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. This partnership is set to significantly increase the variety of games available within the Fortnite ecosystem.

Vision for an Open Metaverse

According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, this initiative reflects a belief in the necessity of collaboration among companies to construct an open metaverse that is both interoperable and equitable. He emphasizes that partnering with Unity will assist developers in creating engaging games that can reach wider audiences and achieve greater success. This move aligns with Epic’s ongoing ambition to evolve Fortnite into an expansive 3D social environment filled with diverse experiences for players to enjoy together.

Current Limitations and Future Prospects

At present, Fortnite operates as a closed ecosystem where creators are restricted to using Epic’s tools for game development. They currently lack the ability to easily transfer their games to Unreal Engine for deployment on other platforms, nor can they introduce experiences developed on different engines into Fortnite. However, Sweeney has expressed his commitment to a future where game engines can interoperate, which he considers essential to his vision.

Expanding the Creator Community

Epic has successfully transformed Fortnite from merely a battle royale game into a versatile platform akin to Roblox, featuring games from various independent creators. By the end of last year, the platform boasted 70,000 creators who had introduced nearly 200,000 “islands,” the term used for experiences in Fortnite. In contrast, Unity’s game development tools enjoy over 1.2 million active users monthly. Even if a small percentage of those developers decide to bring their games to Fortnite, it could significantly enhance the platform’s offerings.

Plans for Future Game Integration

The integration of Unity games into Fortnite is anticipated to roll out next year, as stated by Matt Bromberg, President and CEO of Unity. This collaboration may offer developers new opportunities to reach audiences and generate revenue, which could be particularly beneficial for smaller studios facing challenges in the current industry environment.

A Vision of Decentralization

Despite the potential to centralize more power within Fortnite, Sweeney envisions a future where the platform operates more like the open web. He articulates that while Fortnite remains a major entity controlled by Epic, there will come a time when users can navigate to entirely different sites managed by other companies without Epic’s involvement.

Future Review Processes and System Evolution

Currently, any game created for Fortnite, whether using Epic’s tools or Unity’s, must undergo a review process to ensure compliance with ratings and functionality. However, Sweeney foresees a future where this review process is limited to content hosted by Epic itself, allowing for a more open system where developers can publish their creations freely.

Challenges and Future Developments

Sweeney notes that the existing challenge for developers lies in the need to start from scratch when creating content for Fortnite. Currently, there is no capability to import an Unreal Engine game directly into Fortnite—a feature that is expected to be addressed in Unreal Engine 6, though that may still be years away. Interestingly, he mentions that the ability to publish Unity games into Fortnite will be realized before the option to publish standalone Unreal Engine games.

Enhanced Store Management for Developers

Additionally, Unity’s announcement includes plans to integrate support for Unreal Engine within its commerce management platform. This platform is intended to streamline the management of digital storefronts across various platforms, addressing the complexities developers face with different storefronts and payment systems. Bromberg highlights that this collaboration will provide developers with greater flexibility in store management, reinforcing the shared commitment of both leaders to enhance developer choice and control within the gaming ecosystem.
