Singapore Repertory Theatre Launches Immersive Theatre on Roblox
The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) has made a groundbreaking entry into the realm of immersive theatre by introducing its inaugural experience on the gaming platform Roblox. This initiative aims to engage a new generation of theatre-goers with a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth set in a virtual universe. This project is part of the National Arts Council (NAC)’s Project Arts Metaverse (PAM), which seeks to innovate how audiences interact with classical literature in a digital format. Players will have the opportunity to explore the psyche of Macbeth within a stylized sci-fi backdrop, a departure from traditional presentations.
Collaboration with Metakey and Educational Focus
In collaboration with Metakey and creative agency TBWA\Singapore, SRT has adapted key scenes from its live production of Macbeth for a younger, digitally inclined audience. This digital adaptation is part of a broader initiative, which includes three additional pilot projects under PAM, aimed at examining the intersection of the arts and technology. The NAC and TBWA\Singapore have worked hand-in-hand with SRT to ensure that this Roblox experience aligns with educational standards, transforming “Macbeth on Roblox” into a supplementary tool for educators. The game is designed to adhere to the Ministry of Education’s learning objectives for English literature at both lower and upper secondary levels, thereby enhancing students’ comprehension and appreciation of Shakespearean works.
Anticipated Engagement and the Future of Theatre
SRT anticipates that “Macbeth on Roblox” will attract over half a million play sessions within its first year, representing a significant shift in how classical theatre can connect with future generations. “Project Arts Metaverse” is designed to empower artists and cultural organizations to innovate, creating new and engaging opportunities for audiences to engage with the arts, as expressed by Victor Ang, NAC’s director of technology and innovation. He emphasized that this adaptation serves as a model for effective collaboration among community, private, and public sectors.
Bridging Theatre and Digital Worlds
Charlotte Nors, managing director of SRT, explained that the project was conceived to connect the realms of live theatre and the digital experiences prevalent among younger audiences. Recognizing the extensive time youth spend online and in gaming environments, she highlighted the potential to ignite their interest in the arts by integrating theatre into these virtual spaces.
Innovation in the Metaverse and Educational Impact
Melissa Daniels, head of innovation at TBWA\Asia and TBWA\Singapore, noted the importance of ‘Disruption’ in forging significant connections and how exploring new digital landscapes can dismantle traditional barriers in access to the arts. The return of educational initiatives in the metaverse, as exemplified by “Macbeth on Roblox,” showcases a fresh direction for Singaporean brands and agencies.
Previous Ventures into the Metaverse
In 2023, during a surge in Roblox’s popularity, Changi Airport Group (CAG) launched the ChangiVerse, a new metaverse experience in partnership with Accenture, offering a unique way for users to engage with the airport’s attractions digitally. Additionally, DBS unveiled its metaverse initiative, DBS BetterWorld, which incorporates gamification to promote sustainability and combat food waste.
